All of our Samsung appliances, including the fridge, have needed multiple expensive assemblies that have molded-in non-replaceable components, turning repairs that should have cost ~$20 for a part into >$200 multi-hour DIY jobs. Our $1500 Samsung fridge, which ended up in the landfill after less than 5 years, was one of the lucky ones involved in the class-action lawsuit because it doesn’t properly de-ice the coils. The actual de-icing consists of a tiny heater connected to a 1-inch-wide aluminum Z-shaped “finger” that sits in the middle of the drain below the coils at the back of the fridge, inside. What happens is this finger can’t keep up with the ice buildup and it goes into a runaway state where more and more ice builds up since the near-freezing water can’t drain away. You’re left with a giant brick of ice at the back of the fridge, inside GLUED-DOWN STYROFOAM inside of a thin plastic cover which is also secured solely with adhesive. The styrofoam breaks apart when you try to remove it. We ran it for a couple of months with a few 120mm PC fans circulating air through the coils (as the fan assembly is also integrated into the formed styrofoam as air channels to route air around the fins of the foils, and one of the characteristic signs of this situation is the stock fan grinding on the ice buildup). Samsung advises to NOT use a blow dryer to attempt to de-ice, as this also deforms the styrofoam; they say that in order to remedy this, one must completely empty the fridge…

The old Kenmore was probably built by Whirlpool in a US factory. GE cafe is a rebranded Haier fridge from a Chinese factory. We bought a Samsung (would have preferred LG) fridge 4 years ago and have not needed a single repair. But it is pretty bare bones — French door and in freezer ice maker — no water dispenser or door controls.

I have a Samsung fridge. It’s not a smart fridge, it doesn’t have a screen, bluetooth, or any way to connect to it. I logged into my UniFi stack to monitor devices and it showed up. It had gotten the connection details from my wife’s phone, the other Samsung device and was transmitting data back to Google and Samsung.

Would be nice if they could make a fridge that was simply reliable. I bought one of their fridge’s and couple years later had to do a ridiculous number of mods to the ice maker and fridge that were in the Samsung official service bulletin at the time of purchase. It’s reliable now, but will never buy anything from them again. Many similar models from 2010s had similar issues.

I have been boycotting samsung since ~2014; because of my experience with two, brand new, ~$1000 samsung devices, neither a phone. Their customer service blew me off, because both devices had intermittent issues. I tell people to avoid the company and its products. both devices were malfunctioning within the first month. 1) 4k60 32" monitor, the power button always flaked and it would randomly shut off, thus necessitating unplugging and plugging it back in, 2-3 times a day. customer service: "unplug all monitor cables and plug just power in. what is on the screen? oh, then it's fine. have a nice day!" 2) Refrigerator. Intermittent fan issues were the reason i called. i ended up having to replace, for cause, the heating elements in the refrigerator side as well as the fans due to ice damage to the impellers; then the ice machine started leaking inside the freezer door somewhere, and that leak would freeze on the bottom of the freezer and push the door open, letting water just drip on my floor for hours, nearly damaging the subfloor. I also had to replace the motherboard. So now i have a water-less, ice-less refrigerator. i could go on about how their SD cards are quite fast but don't last long if you have them in outdoor devices (like dashcams, trail cams, security cameras) - the only raspberry pi i've ever had to throw away had a samsung SD card in it that overheated to the point of contact burns - i went to unplug it to reboot it and received a welt from the SD card for my…

its not the "smart stuff" that is the problem (although that stuff is annoying and rarely helpful). I bought a house that had a samsung fridge built within the last 10 years. The fridge had a "defect" [1] where the defroster would leak water over the thermostat, which would then freeze, and most of the fridge would go warm because the thermostat thought it was below freezing. the appliance tech said this is a known defect and they sell aftermarket kits to fully thaw the thermostat. Furthermore, the icemaker would leak water that froze it in position (no, the defrost cycle wouldn't help), requiring an enormous amount of force to break out to unclog it and get ice again. Samsung is _absolutely_ , _positively_, _JUNK_. [1] my personal conspiracy theory is they manufacture these defects on purpose to scare you into buying expensive warranties and slowly nudge you to buy a new fridge in 6 years.
