> As an owner of one of these pair of headphones, I'm trying to understand what this brings to my life? It's not clear why this app is specifically useful for sony headphones? I own the WF-1000XM3 (earbuds). All these headphones and earbuds have a mobile app to control the advanced features. I used to use them with my Mac for work and it was always super-annoying to accidentally tap ANC off or tap "play" while taking them off or putting them on, but during call you couldn't fix it because it'd be in "call mode" and disable ANC/playback/... control. I guess headphones are less annoying because they have a bigger pad to tap, so less chance to misclick, but the earbuds were a constant annoyance.

> Every time a manufacturer says vague descriptions like "security" or "performance" fixes, be wary - they probably removing perfectly working functionality for "reasons" I have a pair of WF-1000XM3s and this is painfully true. ANC was brilliant on these until I naively updated, and whoosh - instantly and grossly degraded ANC, to the point I previously almost didn't hear people talking at distance, keyboard chatter, city traffic etc. and now I do, no matter the app settings. I wanted to upgrade to the in-ear XM4s, but after this? NEVER again Sony. At least for portable audio. I got instead a pair of cheap QCY HT07s (then $28, now ~$20) and got quite surprised with ANC performance on these: easily beats the crap of the XM3s-on-latest-firmware, and gets close to the previous one in audio quality. Which is a lot to say about Sony "updates".

I have owned WF-1000XM3, 4, and (currently) 5. I got the 5 with discount as replacement for the 4 since the battery of one earbud was dead due to a firmware bug. The noise cancelling gets slightly better each iteration. There's another thing the 3 and 4 are better at than the 5: easier to get out of the charging case. Also, while you could replace the batteries in each of these versions, the IP rating would be in practice regressed.

The automatic switching feature is a failure, honestly. I have never gotten it to work as it should across any of their AirPods models. Also, the mic on the original AirPods were best-in-class when they came out, but they have since been bested by many other offerings (from Jabra, Sony, and others). The AirPods Pro were worse than a pair of Master and Dynamic MW30s I briefly had (which was surprising, since they are niche headphones), and they are definitely worse than my current Sony WF1000XM4s that I have now (which is even more surprising, since the mic on the WF1000XM3s were not good).

I think that somehow each Bluetooth device has its own kinks. With my QuietComfort 35 sometimes the A2DP profile is not negotiated and it falls back to HSP/HFP which sounds like a landline in the 90s. Then you have to disconnect/reconnect it and hope it works this time. Another pair of cheap sports headphones I own just like to pair with everything that is in range if no other device is connected. And lastly my Sony WF-1000XM3 just never automatically connects to my phone. I always have to manually go into the Bluetooth menu to connect them. I think there should be some type of conformity certification, not for the implementation of the Bluetooth protocol itself but for how a device has to act in certain scenarios.

Maybe not the perfect instagram digital nomad life but I do have some experience on working from the road. I travel a lot between EU/Asia/LatAm (yes its still happening) and for that my company provides unlimited plans. I spend most of my year on the road, from 6-8 months, but the longest stretch was only 4 months. We have 2 subs that cover pretty much the whole world. I use a MacBook 13 fully specced out and a Samsung 21 Ultra where, when outside of the office, I hotspot from when WiFi in public is unavailable (LA/Asia has lots of free fast WiFi places). Electronics with me, I take: laptop, phone, camera (RX100 6 or my A7R 3) and WF1000XM3. That's it. Sometimes it's already too much. Can't live without: VPN (personal/office), streaming services (spotify/netflix/hbo) and I load some books on my phones kindle app. I never think about data limits but I am also never too far from main cities. If I could change something would be to get the MacBook 16. But then I think of the weight and hassle.
