They were slowing down to the point of unusable. I had a Galaxy S3 from 2012 to 2024, then got a hand me down Galaxy S9 for free. I don't like that I can't remove the battery, but it's got a SD card so I don't have to worry about storage ever and a headphone jack, so I don't have to worry about my headphones running out of batteries.

I have tried, a long time ago, LineageOS on Samsung Galaxy S3 and S4. The both of the ports were so buggy, that by those experiences I could not trust the maintainers to be capable of securing the system. It may have been a false assumption, but I had to think stability/bugs and security must correlate at some levels.

Nope, it is just worst. Want a smart-phone? Get an iPhone. Want a mobile Linux computer you can make calls from? Android. Android does not do the 'phone' part right. I constantly complain of a friend with his new expensive s23 or whatever that acts like a cheap phone whenever he gets in a group call and my whole group complains of the ear shattering noise and artifacts from his side immediately (nothing at all wrong with all of our iphones). It was bad enough we couldn't do higher quality facetime audio together, but the expensive phone's hardware on wasn't even good for various apps we tried to talk through. From another thread they aren't even good at web browsing. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39729397 the entire ecosystem of Android is a mostly poorly cobbled together mobile Linux computer aiming to lower costs as much as possible to sell you ads. Notice how older iphones with worst specs are still working fine? Still my Samsung S3 with it's forward thinking 2gb of ram in 2012 (4x the 512 in the iPhone 4s) is still sometimes being used as a Linux computer for me in 2024. Awful mic on it then as well.

Only one of my flagship android phones bricked iself: a Samsung S3. The rest just became painfully slow. When I tap camera and the flagship phone seems to have to finish a conversation with some server somewhere before camera opens and the moment is gone then I get annoyed. So after iPhone got user replacable keyboards I dared to try it and it has been better for me.

I just got my Verizon Galaxy S3, and ordered the 20-pack of NFC tags offered by http://tagsfordroid.com I think I know what my Dad felt like when he got his first label printer... Within days it seemed like every object in his office was labeled... I've got a tag in my car to automatically send my wife a "Headed home" SMS, a tag on my night stand to toggle between 'night' (silent) and 'day' (loud) volume settings, a tag by my back door to launch CardioTrainer when I go out for a run (this one may have crossed the "I've run out of ideas" line...). I'm using the keychain tag to dial a response number for the fire department I'm a member of.
