My anecdata: tl;dr: All 3 of my Samsung M.2 NVMe SSDs have failed in less than 3 years. 100% failure rate. My first SSD was a 1TB Samsung 970 EVO. It failed after 2 years and 8 months. It was replaced under warranty with a 1TB 970 EVO Plus. That replacement has now also failed after 1 year and 9 months. I bought a 2nd 1TB 970 EVO Plus in May 2019. It has now also failed (2 years and 7 months). Both are expected to be replaced under warranty. The 2 970 EVO Plus SSDs clearly had hardware errors (that were not accurately reflected in SMART data) that caused everything from system hangs, game crashes to file corruption on OTHER drives. I couldn't believe it at first but after 5 days of testing and trial and error, I had it confirmed. As soon as I removed those SSDs, my PC was completely stable again. In the meantime, I have bought a Kingston KC3000 1TB drive as I no longer trust Samsung M.2 NVMe SSDs. On the other hand, I have a Samsung EVO 850 SATA drive which has been rock-solid.

E5-2650v2 in a Chinese mATX motherboard for me. Got the cpu years ago for like $50 as an eBay server pull. 970 Evo SSD. 24GB of mismatched DDR3. Runs all my home server junk and my dev environment (containerized with Incus). Every year I tell myself I should grab a newer Ryzen to replace it but it honestly just keeps chugging along and doesn't really slow me down.

I've experienced some slowdowns recently, too. Samsung 970 Evo nvme ssd + i7-12700k.

> The 980 Pro had a bug in firmware causing the drive to just fail (enter read only mode) after a certain amount of time, this had been fixed for well over a year in firmware but many people didn't update their firmware I literally just finished putting all the parts of my new build in my basket but haven't ordered it yet. I was going for a 980 Pro (for it seems reasonably priced)... If I buy brand new from Samsung, would you happen to know if I'll get a SSD with the latest firmware or would I need to apply the firmware update by myself? FWIW I ran a 950 Pro when it came out (2015?), then a 970 Evo (which my wife is now using). I've been very happy with these NVMe M.2 SSDs.

I've lost 2 M2 drives the first was 2TB Samsung 970 Evo which exceeded it's write endurance limit. Either due to firmware or me writing too much I'm not sure. The other M2 was a smaller Gigabyte drive that had some hardware failure. My new drive is a 1TB Samsung 980 Pro which has a write endurance of 600TBW so if I wrote 1.5TB a day it would last just over a year. I don't know how much endurance the drive in a Mac Mini has but I can't imagine it is any better than that. I would not want to write so much per day to the systems internal drive if it is not easily and cheaply replacable.

Here's a counterpoint: Apple has no official presence in my country and if you have any problems with their products, you will be told to go pound sand. This is in spite of them being significantly more expensive than in countries like the US (where they already cost at a premium). On the other hand, a guy I know well bought a mid-tier consumer Samsung SSD in China a few years ago (970 Evo IIRC), run it into the ground doing video encoding pretty much non-stop, contacted the official Samsung retailer in our country asking for a replacement, and they seemed happy to accommodate him. YMMV. From my point of view, Korean companies seem much more customer-oriented overall.
