Not GP, but I've been at this for over a decade now and here's the maintenance that I've had to do: 1. one z-wave switch died after 10 years, replaced it with a zigbee one. 2. Two GE zigbee bulbs failed after 8 years. That's it. I've made a point of trying to avoid anything which requires the internet/cloud to function. The hue bulbs that I added in 2015 are still going strong. I see so many people complaining about the short lifespan of bulbs and all I can figure is that their power dirty or they are buying very cheap equipment.

I don't care much on the politics of it all because I do think a lot of it is silly, especially with how profit-motivated companies will still find a way to profit. I will say I've had a number of Hue bulbs starting back in about 2018 and have yet to lose one except for a surge that got an unprotected strip. Otherwise, plenty of white and color bulbs have worked steadfast for nearly a decade while costing a fraction in energy. That said, I do miss the warmth of incandescent lighting, but I don't miss replacing bulbs multiple times a year

My Philips Hue bulbs are going strong for just over 7 years now. They are the premium bulb in my experience. I've bought other LED strips using controllers compatible with Hue, but they died where there are obvious burned points all along the strip. We all have different experiences that will counter each other, so it's frustrating to no end on finding trust worthy devices. Regardless of all of that frustration, thank the gods we no longer have to deal with CFL

Personally, I hate overhead lighting and much prefer lamps or wall sconce type of lighting. I did replace my overhead bulbs with Hue bulbs, but I don't feel the not very bright aspect. My overhead bulbs are most often at 25%. Anything over 50% is just too much for me. I love my Hue lights and am trying to switch over to all Hue bulbs. I still have a few regular bulbs in places that just don't get a lot of use, so they get ignored

As I mentioned in another comment, I've been running this system for around 10 years now, across 3 homes, growing in size each time. I use a mix of Z-Wave and Zigbee devices (as well as lots of WiFi such as ESPHome and other devices), I started initially with Hue bulbs, moved to HA, ditched the Hue hub, increased to near 100 bulbs a mix of Hue and IKEA, door/window sensors and motion sensors, water leak sensors, wireless dimmers, and plenty more. My kids don't know any different, the oldest now 5 has grown up with automatic lights, and has a smart switch I built for her to change the colour of the lights in her room as she wishes; we occasionally sit together and she choses a new set of colours for each button, my son (3) likes to pick a colour for his bedroom lights before bed using the colour picker on mine or my wife's phone. The kids are aware that if they don't come to dinner when we ask I can just shout "Ok Nabu, turn off the TV" from another room and just the suggestion will convince them to do it themselves. There's some maintenance for replacing batteries, but I really like that IKEAs stuff uses mostly AAA and I have automations to notify where the low batteries are, and as a household with young children, we've always got batteries charged and ready to go. We use Frigate to notify us with a voice prompt across the house when people walk through the gate before they even reach our front door, we have audible alerts if the garage door was opened, and plenty more. And I don't know if it's just me, but responsiveness seems worse in recent months (using iOS app, don't know if it's the app or the bulbs or the hub). And sometimes the app is out of sync with the actual light states. I haven't seen this in years of using Hue bulbs and app. Plus finding I'm logged out and having to log back in when I just want to turn a light on/off in the middle of the night (because baby) is a PITA.

Their Hue bulbs are particularly high quality as light bulbs go, and their motion sensors are one of the PIR & Zigbee best in class available (a big thing being their short trigger CD). It's separately a reasonable upgrade path for people becoming increasingly familiar with smart home tech, smart bulbs are a particularly easy entry point with clear added value with new features (white temperature is a personal favourite) and battery operated motion sensors, with a clear path to further home automation adoption with Home Assistant.
