50/50 This is not a new idea. Several companies/single owner LLC's do this for a massively inflated price. I understand why the inflated price, support and warranties, etc. IT is not that hard for people who are technically inclined. People who are not into it don't understand why. If placement/marketing was for SMB that wanted to maximize dd-wrt usage and get a support contract in place I can see that but outside of that, and a marketing youtube channel and being proactive on reddit, Idk how much can it scale and what point will you not get a cease and desist from vendors because I'm sure they have something nasty in their terms of service, which I think you may need to click through to enable the flash. You've identified your market competiton price points, and all have deeper pockets than you, but do not offer free, open source software. WRT3200ACM and the other previous model is a fab of mine to grab, it's been a year but I've collected 10+ and deploeyd them in strategic places for personal use, You wouldn't need regulatory approval IMO. prototyping, what type? You'd follow the release schedule, get the best flavors/models and support those. Overtime maybe you'd contribute back to the project, especially during hardware revisions. But it is very different from buying used hardware from ebay and flashing it to resell vs buying new and selling it as a value add on. 1. Yes, proper hacker route. 2. Proper route to an extent, it legitmiazes support, warranty and security. 3.…

> Not quite, some ISPs lock down their routers and you can't expose the relevant ports publically. Here in Italy our public Communications Regulatory Authority (AGCOM) has sentenced that ISPs cannot mandate a specific router type and MUST provide technical details so that any subscriber can be able to use a modem/router of choice. This was after quite a bit of lobbying by the "Free Modem Alliance ( https://www.freemodemalliance.it/ ) So I guess that at the end of the day i guess it's mostly a matter of political activism. I love this, and run my own WRT3200ACM with OpenWRT

I used openWRT a few months ago on my LinkSys WRT3200ACM, I was pretty motivated with the stuff I could do (vpn, block ads etc). Unfortunatly, I had to go back to stock firmware because Wifi performace and issues connecting certain devices (vacum robot). It was sad to have to give up on it.

I have that router and it's working well for me. A friend of mine got it and wasn't working well for him. We both used OpenWRT on that. It seems that the version he was using (more recent than mine) doesn't work well on that hardware. Which is as unfortunate as ironic since the WRT3200ACM is the spiritual successor to the WRT45g that spawned the whole OpenWRT/dd-wrt thing. Regarding mine... I plan on switching to some kind of x86 and run pfSense. I'll probably keep it around and use it as a wireless access point only.

It was suggested those type of issues were related to the 3rd wifi radio. It's recommended to disable it: https://openwrt.org/toh/linksys/wrt3200acm#wifi_driver_bug_a... . I have the same device, but only use it as router (no wifi enabled) and have a Belkin RT3200 as dumb AP for wifi 6 (as suggested in some other comment).

I quite like this build [1] for the WRT3200ACM. I run non-critical devices on the 2.4 network and only personal devices are on the 5. I used to have some intermittent Wi-Fi issues but haven’t had any since switching to the divested build. [1] https://divested.dev/unofficial-openwrt-builds/mvebu-linksys...

I ran into this after considering upgrading my hardware (WRT3200ACM and friends can't upgrade past 22.0.2 due to a "broken mv88e6176 switch." https://openwrt.org/releases/22.03/notes-22.03.3#mvebubroken... But the Flint model (802.11ax) is using Qualcomm's hacked up OpenWRT: https://forum.openwrt.org/t/gl-inet-gl-ax1800-flint-users-di... Sounds like it'll be a while.
