Bought a LG C1 last year, every-time I got the option to say "NO" to any agreement I said no. So far I haven't seen a single advert in the past year. The voice commands don't work. But who really wants to talk to their tv lol. I mainly use it for Plex and my Xbox, everything works really well for those purposes, so I appreciate LG at-least giving me the option to not use all of its "smart" features. --edit-- I am using this TV in B.C Canada.

My simplest solution to this is buying a TV panel. If all your OS-level and panel-level mitigations fail, and any burn-in bothers you too much, just sell it on the used market. I specifically bought an LG C-series 42" OLED TV for my gaming/work monitor use, and if/when burn-in becomes unbearable, I'm certain it can be sold to someone for a reasonable price. They'll likely use it as a plain TV and sit too far away to even notice any burn-in. Might be more difficult to pull off if you buy gaming-oriented smaller panels, so I advise against that.

I would totally prefer to buy something without spyware. But so far I have not found a good alternative to my 42" C-series OLED. You do have to carefully configure it to not phone home, but besides that (and some minor problems with peak brightness), it's great. If there was a non-spyware replacement, I'd buy it.

The "smart" TV in my office is hooked up to a chromecast thing and I interact with the chromecast dongle. My TV has never been hooked up to the TV and in fact I haven't even accepted the EULA. The GUI on the TV is lightning fast, and since it can't update itself (and never will!) it will remain lightning fast. If my 4k HDMI dongle begins to struggle, I will plug in a new device via HDMI. I was not able to win that argument with my wife on the living room TV but our LG (C series) I was able to disable the ads and with a recent update I can now turn off all but the ~4 apps we use (youtube + disney+, + netflix and one or two rotating services). Fingers crossed LG does not push the "brick your TV" update before it's usefule EOL. The HBO app on our ~2016 era samsung was totally useless by 2018. I am hoping we get more than 2 years out of our current TV before the GUI starts creaking under it's own weight. The Samsung also started showing ads in the app menu selection about 3 years after we started buying it (from korean car makers, really good way to ensure I never buy your brands!).

Various sections of my screen (LG C series) are significantly thicker than 30mm. Also - this isn’t a speaker problem this is a content problem. I watched the princess bride last week on the TV, and didn’t require captions, but I’m watching Pluribus on Netflix and I’m finding it borderline impossible to keep up without them.

hey, i asked you on the other thread as well (the imac one) but this was my question —- Hey, I have a similar setup ( https://kayg.org/uses ) where I use a LG C148 as my primary TV and monitor. I do all work on it, however I am unable to use tiling window managers as you recommend because I always struggle to see windows / text that is placed above my eye-level. For that reason, I prefer to use manual window management solutions instead. I am curious how do you deal with that problem, one big TV user to another? or do you not have that problem at all? thanks!

My basic advice for media consumption in 2026: - Buy the biggest LG C -series OLED TV you can afford and/or fit (WebOS, no Android TV crapola to deal with) - Never connect it to the internet, LG wants to add all kinds of AI crap to it. - Set it to Filmmaker Mode[0] to disable all of the "improvements" it tries to do to the image - Buy an Apple TV Done. The ATV can turn the TV on and off and adjust the volume. You won't need the TV remote for anything after that. I still use my 10 year old Apple TV 4k daily and it works like new, no slowdown, every single relevant streaming platform supports it with a dedicated app. It even got every single tvOS release until this fall. [0] https://filmmakermode.com/ - also a good idea to do this to relative's TVs.
