Anecdotally, I'm using a 27" 4K LG monitor I got in about mid 2017, so going on eight years now, and I've never had an issue with the nub, except that when the monitor turns on, it will automatically pull up the nub menu after a few seconds, so if you go to change the input at the wrong time, you'll accidentally shut it off. Not saying you're wrong about the ergonomics, but I personally like it.

I have a pair audio-technica headphones, using them regularly for about 12 years... I have pair of Monsoon Speakers bought since College (2000), so that's over 20 years. They still work great, just an headjack input, volume/bass control. Simple and they are connected to my PS4. I have a dell monitor, bought in 2006, still working great with my mac. I bought an LG 4k one last year, and the Thubderbolt port just failed. Right now it is staying as a dead weight, and I am deciding if it is even worth fixing (or it can be fixed). Some accessories do last decades. Apple accessories are made to last for 2-3 years and discarded after as they are not easily serviceable.

They for a few years had 4K panels that would “blow out” in the corners over time, worse they where a panel supplier to other vendors (including Dell), of the three 4K lg monitors I had two had it happen but the last one I bought didn’t and they apparently fixed the issue at some point. It was super annoying because their support was useless. It put me off LG but as they do make panels for others they are hard to avoid.

One difference between Monitors and TV used to be that Monitors used RGB Subpixel-Layout and TVs used BGR. (i.e. TV panels are upside down) Configuring subpixel-layout per monitor is something that most OS won't allow. So if you use several monitors, you usually have to mount the BGR-ones upside down. (Otherwise fonts will be blurry...) For some time now there are really cheap 4K Monitors with BGR-layout available. If you mount those upside down you're fine... (I use LG 4K Monitors mounted upside down in combination with other screens)

My biggest boons was adding a tuneable LED strip along the back side of my desk, which softly lights up the wall behind my monitors, and getting a Colorimeter. The colorimeter in particular has been great - most monitors come eye-searingly bright out of the box, and with a white point nowhere near optimal - I calibrate all three of my displays (MBP + 2 LG 4K 27" monitors) to 6500k, 120cd/m2 which for me is tolerable and leaves my eyes not feeling so tired at the end of the day.
