I used to work on a T440s on Debian from 2013 - 2017. I am surprised that your battery life is so poor on Ubuntu. I was able to frequently push my 9-cell battery laptop to 12 hours with careful usage. If I forgot my charging cable at home, I could do a full day at the office with music and internet on battery.

> Way too much work, errors everywhere for no apparent reason. Interestingly, that would describe my experience with OSX (or macOS). At home I use my Lenovo T440s with Linux without any problems or glitches in the past two years. Before I had a Dell Vostro, running Linux without problems for five years. At work I have to use a MacPro (the winecooler-shaped thing) in a network run by the OSX Server app. Every other day I have to disconnect the thunderbolt display because it can't be woken up. Thunderbolt network has an incredible latency when connected to other machines in the same room. Unless you transfer one huge file, 100Mbit ethernet is always faster. Sometimes you're stuck at the login window because the magic mouse and keyboard refuse to connect (randomly) for half an hour. The OSX Server App fills the error logs at an incredible speed with only six machines and a couple more users. Network home drives are impossible to get right: NFS breaks ~/Library. AFP has constant "Resource busy" errors. SMB is the only one that works for all users but experiences so many random bugs that are impossible to trace. I can't remember a day where all users were able to login in the morning and no program had crashed overnight with data loss due to an SMB mount suddenly disappearing (work is scientific computing). And this is on a 1Gbit ethernet network, six machines and a server, all in the same room. Incredible! And has anybody ever tried updating the Server App? Last time it got stuck

Ok, but did you also run it for a while and compare how snappy or laggy the different DEs are? Because with xfc my old T440s Thinkpad from 2013 is still perfectly fine for browsing the web, or watching movies on the HD projector, without sacrificing too many modern interface conveniences. I can't say the same for Gnome or KDE, and that's no slight against either (I happily use the latter on my more recent work laptop). Having said that VSCode runs perfectly fine on the T440s too, so Electron and JavaScript aren't the fundamental reason those DEs are too demanding to use.

I have a T470 bought in 2017. I have done the following: - replaced the screen when I accidentally dropped water on the laptop, and the screen shorted out. - upgraded RAM from 8 GB to 32 GB - Replaced internal battery after it gave out about 5 years in. - Expanded storage by putting a memory chip on the WAN slot. I think almost all of these issues would have required getting a new laptop if it was not repairable. I also have done similar repairs on my T440s, so it will work as an emergency laptop if anything happens to my T470. In fact, it did when I my screen stopped working 3rd month of Covid.

My Thinkpad T440S from 2014 works almost great under Ubuntu 14.04. Everything's going properly (keyboard, battery, etc) but the Wifi is not. Seems like a RTL8192EE isn't a linux' first class citizen :/ Btw I tried different distros before sticking with Ubuntu 14.04: it really the most finished (at least on my t440s).

Thinkpad T440s ( Archlinux + KDE ) I got this with 8GB ram and 500GB hdd, I can work on it for 5-6 hrs before the battery runs out but the charger is very light. This thinkpad weighs around 1.2 KG's and it's easy to carry and the keyboard feels great when typing. If I have to buy a new laptop I would try Lenovo X1 Carbon (the 2016 one, with skylake processor ) EDIT: I got this on ebay for $380 with 2 years onsite warranty, so keep an eye on ebay listings.

I have the 2014 T440s and it's the best laptop I've ever used, though I guess that's not a particularly large sample size. I definitely think the 2015 T450s should be much better because they brought back the buttons but the clickpad is not really that hard to get used to. I think this year's Thinkpads should be really awesome, and if I could justify it I'd easily get a 2015 X1C now that they fixed the keyboard and trackpad. It does have a wifi issue, it seems to me that the Intel 7260 wifi chip has serious issues across multiple laptops from what I've read online. But I found that for my home network switching to 5ghz fixed all my issues so it might just be an interference thing.

> Linux you will often have difficulties to connect to the random WIFI setups you'll find, or to manage the external monitors I will say that linux has amazingly improved. I haven't had a single problem with my t440s wrt wifi or displays. NetworkManager for wifi and xrandr --auto for displays.. and I'm good to go. Even my thinkpad dock has been working perfectly. And of course, the thinkpad keyboards are damned nice. When was the last time you used a linux laptop? Because it doesn't sound recent (within 2 years)

I'm currently very happy with ThinkPad T440s. It covers all your requirements, comes with a FullHD panel (optional touchscreen) and double batteries. The only downside is the new Lenovo touch/clickpad. I got used to it, but it took me a while to figure out the settings which worked for me.
