Lenovo ThinkPad R61, 2 GB RAM, 1.7 duo-core, 80 GB HDD Windows 7 Laptop. It is still my second machine(or third, after my desktop/phone) and it is perfect for everything, including some python programming and writing/surfing. The keyboard quality of the machine is just insanely great, combined with the trackpoint. I got it for 1300 BGN, which right now would be 650EUR and I bought it 8 years ago :) The only thing I have changed is the hinges once(cost me 20EUR). It has been the best investment for me and hopefully my desktop will be surpass it someday :)

I bought my T430 (N1T56PB) on August 2013. 10 months later "Tab" key fell off. 2 months later "A" key fell off and few months ago another one - "S". Currently "E" is the one that behaves a bit differently and surely will be the next one to fall off. At the beginning I thought that these islandish keyboards aren't that bad, but after a year I'm sure they are total crap, which shouldn't be put in stuff that costs $1500+. Previously I owned R61 (NF55WPB), which was surely lower-end laptop and I didn't have any problems with keyboard for 3 years that I spent using it (until NVS140m exhibited its factory problem and I have no longer seen anything on the screen).

Participated last year with my Thinkpad R61 that I still use as my main laptop after getting so cozy with it during the challenge. A lot of the group was great, but some friends I invited to the challenge had a bad time in the irc with transphobes and we all dropped out. I hope this year people moderate the chat a bit better, but I understand its not their day job to police random folk that enter the hobby challenge community.

Back in those days, ThinkWiki was an excellent resource. Not sure nowadays? I ran Mac OS X (as it was called back then) on my ThinkPad R61 back in the days (2008 or so?). Everything worked, but I did have to replace the Intel WiFi with an Atheros one and fiddle with all kind of options (it is likely easier these days). One or the other supported packet injection. Mac OS X (I think it was 10.6 or 10.7?) did boot a bit slower than 'Linux' though (probably ran Ubuntu with GNOME 2 back in those days; with a more lightweight WM/DE it'd have been even quicker). The TrackPoint is one of those amazing tools I miss on a Mac. However, the Magic Trackpad 2 works on Linux and Windows. See this HN discussion [1] for details. Together with a HHKB with BT I have an excellent keyboard and pointer device supporting BT and USB. I even have carry bags to protect both devices. [1] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18273559
