I would say even newer Thinkpads are a great deal. I recently bought a P15 Gen 1 from 2020 for ~$700 and it's been an absolute monster. Core i9, RTX 5000, and 128GB or ram. Through research I learned that brand new this machine would have cost around ~$5,800 but even five years later it's better than most new laptops around the ~$700 price point. The "hard" thing about thinkpads is you have to find them. I must have searched eBay listing for close to a month before the right thinkpad popped up. Especially with the workstation grade laptops, they were so configurable brand new that there are something like 48 possible variants you can find, and finding one with the exact specs you want can be incredibly difficult.

Running Mint 20 on ThinkPad P15 Gen 1 with GPU installed. It took some time to get it working through GPU on Display Port (but I don't recall what I did). Was fine for ~about year, but recently I am having Telegram crashing when clicked on a picture or video. (Mysteriously, this happens only when displaying through DP with 4k resolution - 1080p is still working). Other than that no other issues.

I think it'll be the same on the MacBook pro 14 m1, at least for some people like myself. I had a Lenovo p15 with an Intel chip running fedora before my m1 MacBook and I got roughly the same life during the same working day between the two.

For developers, going with Intel only (no Nvidia discrete card) is the most sensible choice. I have P15 and it's riddled with issues - not that they are not solvable, but it needs workarounds, restarts of X (logout/login), or running discrete only (which eats battery). The problem is they don't make the larger workstation laptops with Intel only.

Eh, I have been using latest gen x1 carbon for last year or so that I got from work and recently bough a p15 gen1 for some personal windows usage. I have to say, both machines are terrible. X1 is pretty slow (some 4c i7 with basic iGPU) - running dual 4k displays, webex and similar apps is pretty slow, even scrolling websites is not smooth quite often. Also, fan never turns off and battery life is well, not great. P15 is just ridiculous for it's MSRP, touchpad is shit, battery life is shit, CPU sometimes gets stuck at ~400Mhz just because (x1 also has this problem actually) and after googling it seems to be common issue with lenovo hardware (WTF) Also, why they they included 2 thunderbolt ports and 1 usb-c where not one of them supports charging is beyong me, having to use this stupid lenovo psu every time is PITA)

>but became accustomed used to buying new PCs every six or seven years. Why would they buy any quicker? The average laptop in 2016 was only maybe 10% faster than a laptop in 2010 thanks to that stupid Ultrabook shit (and Intel refusing to push out more than a 10% YOY improvement in their standard-voltage desktop lineup), which resulted in 2020's CPU lineup only being about twice as fast as one made in 2010. And, so long as you had a machine with an SSD, there's very little difference between a laptop from 2015 and 2023 if all you're doing is browsing Facebook (which is what most people are doing with them). Plus, at the end of the 2010s, tablets started to become mature enough to supplant laptops as the household's only computer, so you'd either buy a tablet or get a new laptop, but not both. Phones are a different beast in two ways- first, if you're buying Android, you're throwing your phone away every 2 years anyway because the ecosystem sucks; Qualcomm is even more incompetent when it comes to hardware performance than Google is with software performance and it really shows, especially since Android allows manufacturers to stack a bunch of other unremovable shit and skins that does nothing but take up storage space, enshittifying the device right out of the box like having 10 unremovable IE6 toolbars did back when people still used IE6 (Lenovo is less guilty of this than some but it's still not as clean as a Pixel is). Plus, financial incentives exist (for both Android…
