It's the story of good hardware but bad software all over again. I always wondered why except for Apple nobody gets this right. I know, it's somewhat totally different, but man, it surely can't be that hard (especially not effing 30 million bucks hard). Luckily I only use my Sonos IKEA lamp only with Air Play, but the few times I have to use their app? Bonkers. Absolutely trash.

the app is utter rubbish. I have never seen anything worse in years, really. First thing, you need an account (why? what for?). I have an Ikea symfony speaker and I basically can't use it. The whole process of discovery and connection is broken, had to go through several hacks. It could not connect to my very simple home network (no fancy authentication, 2.5GHz). Went to use the cable, it connects (hurray), but there is no way to play local files. Only cloud stuff. I had to give up. These devices are everything music devices should NOT be. In the bin now.

I would side with this. Recently was looking for same feature (multi-room audio) and ended up buying IKEA SYMFONISK (basically sonos) speakers, that function without an issue. Only extra step is going to Sonos app to merge them and Spotify picks them up as one device , no questions asked. So technically it should be rather easy, no latency issues at all.

I also use Navidrome on a Raspberry Pi 3 with a 2.5" 1TB disk connected to it via usb. I don't use metadata and or last.fm; My folder structure info enough for me. Easy enough to play music on mobile devices around home. For playing music in the living room i use an Ikea Sonos (Symfonisk bookshelf) and the standard Sonos app connecting to the collection via smb. For the car i transfered (most of) the collection to a sd card. Makes it also it's onw backup :) I could also use Spotify since the kids love it, but i don't really use it that much myself.
