I really wanted to use a tablet – either iOS or Android – as a lightweight work device but it was too clumsy and uncomfortable to use. Any time you encounter a new situation, you're not sure you'd be able to solve it within the OS boundaries. I finally settled on an 8inch "proper laptop": the GPD Pocket 3. Linux works like a charm, real keyboard, and powerful. It even replaced my spec'd out 15" Dell Precision (from 2017) because it's so more fun to use.

Speaking of good enough computers, I'm really happy with the power of mobile processors right now. With my usage (dev, some Docker, browsing, on a light Manjaro+i3), I can shop for form factor and utility and know it won't feel sluggish. Replaced my 2017 15" Dell workstation with a 8" GPD Pocket 3 that feels more snappy and sharper. I thought it would be my couch/on-the-go/emergency computer but it became my mobile workstation as well. Only grip with the form factor: it's too small to fit on both laps so I have to use my bag to have a "laptop".

I have a GDP Pocket 3 with WSL. It's supposed to take over my old 3rd gen Thinkpad X1 Carbon, but that thing keeps trekking on. The KVM support is amazing on the Pocket, though. Wish it had the battery life of my M1.

The GPD Pocket 3 has a unique module system, one of which is a KVM/RS-232. It allows you to use its display and keyboard/touchpad to drive a headless system. It's a super versatile and ingenious little machine. I love it to bits.

The new pocket 3 [0] comes rather close to what I would consider ultimate (they listened to the backers, me included, asking for a zaurus like 2 in 1). But… I am starting to dislike the long term value of this thing; it will break and then it is a throw away. I have most GDP devices and when they break, after about 3 years consistently, they will tell you it is too old to fix. I ordered the Astro Slide [1] as well which has the same issue. So the dream is, for me, a slightly smaller pocket 3, keyboard quality of the Slide, with 5g and the swivel screen with 1 Side lcd and one side (color) eink, running Linux and built like the Frame.work (easy to repair and upgrade). I don’t mind bulkier (meaning thicker, not wider); actually, I would welcome it for bigger batteries. I would toss all my other devices. > before you say “sounds like you just want a tablet” One of my friends uses a GPD Pocket 3, which is an 8-inch computer that's small enough to fit in your pocket, with a full keyboard, touchpad, and touchscreen that swivels to become a tablet. It's pretty nifty. https://gpd.hk/gpdpocket3
