I don't have experience with Fitbit, but I have been using Garmin Fenix 7x for the past two years and I can confirm that at least in my case, its measurement of my sleep quality is only loosely connected to reality. As I am an avid runner and I train daily, I pay close attention to all sleep, heart rate, stress, and running performance numbers. Unfortunately, it will frequently say I had good night of sleep when I definitely feel groggy or the opposite. As to misclassifying idle time before and after sleep, I recognise that simple lifestyle adjustment could fix it (just don't browse on your phone before sleep!) But that of course won't fix it if you try to lie still but can't fall asleep.

Totally with you on everything you’ve said. I’ve had a few Instincts and Fenixes, and yeah - I think the Instinct 2 was my favourite watch of all time (currently using an Apple Watch Mega Super Ultra), but I loved the concept of the 7X… just a shame I couldn’t get used to that red tone on the solar. I found the same thing too - the instinct face gets protected while the Fenix is almost a brick and rock magnet :( So far, I think it’s only the black Tacticals that look like they would hide more surface scratches… but I’ve never had one yet. But, yeah - think if the Instinct 3 Solar came with Sapphire, I’d sleep better at night, so much so that it would probably be my forever watch!

Not OP but I have a Fenix 7x. What happens very infrequently is that I would wake up during the night, and then be absolutely still (I'm trying to go back to sleep) except for checking my watch every 15-20mn. This does not get detected as "awake" the following morning. I don't really care because I got this watch so I can upload a track and follow it while recording various metrics during 5+ days, and for this it works perfectly.

As a distance runner myself, this is accurate. I've known a few people who are hesitant to switch from Apple (or really any "smart watch"), but when they do, it's the same comment "Oh wow I didn't know these were so good!" A common complaint I hear is "yeah but there's no apps! how do I add extra functionality to my watch?" .. they just don't believe you when you say "it's already there" Smart watches are general purpose devices, more sandboxes than anything else.. where as Fitness/Sports Watches (Garmin/Coros/Suunto/etc) already have everything you need for Fitness/Sports, and things you didn't know existed. What's happened is that it's trivially easy for Fitness watches to add some smart offerings (Calls/Texts/Notifications) and also some apps...then it is for Apple/Google/Samsung to add fitness things. Sure Apple and also Google did add in some training load/status/etc stuff.. which is great cool... but it's also still a device that I have to charge daily, instead of monthly. And then, when theres a fitness metric or long term stat I want to see, i have to give some third party developer my health data to do it. An example of that last thing. I have a friend who's a triathlete, I'm going to travel to run a Half Marathon with him, he uses an Apple Watch SE, I'm on a Garmin Fenix 7x. He's jealous of all the long term stats I have, like all the training load over time, adaptive workouts, etc etc. He's on that cusp of ditching a smart watch and getting a dedicated fitness watc…

I’ve got a Garmin 7x. Sometimes I think about switching to something like this as I’m going through an unhealthy phase and not utilising the smart watch capability very much. However, I can’t give up the torch. I cannot believe how handy it is having a torch two button clicks away on my wrist, wherever I am, as opposed to fumbling in my pocket or searching around for my phone or a torch. Use it every day, absolute game changer.
