Bought an XPS 15 9500 last March, ticks these boxes for me. I think these laptops are underrated as Linux machines, frequently overshadowed by ThinkPads. - Good linux support, only had to manually install one driver. - Good durability. I'm very careless with my devices, all my laptops have broken at the hinges at least once. This one has held up after multiple hard drops. - Very quiet, fan noise barely noticeable even under load. - You can upgrade the memory - Easy to take apart and service as a user, which is great since I'm going to break something and have to service it eventually. Dell XPSs have always been the best for this IMO, at least of the mainstream laptops I've used. TLDR:
Good combo of linux+repairable+quality+rugged

I'm on the latest kernel (Arch btw) and I still have to manually "sleep" my Dell XPS 9500. To add insult to injury, it's not even "real" S3 sleep. It's Microsoft, "we want access to your machine 24/7" S1 sleep. To be fair, I haven't spent much time in the last year messing with any of that. I do miss the days when I could shut the lid on my old Thinkpad, it'd sleep, and I'd open it a day later to an i3lock screen, and it would have only drained a percentage point.

I'm currently typing this on my second Dell XPS 15, and I'm looking for a new Linux-based SDE Laptop for my day job. My first Dell XPS (Dell XPS 15 9560-NGG9X) literally exploded after overloading the USB bus with an external camera. It's completely dead... My current Dell XPS (Dell XPS 15 9500 (FGHDC)) has startup problems, it keeps rebooting until it is warm enough to operate normally. This happened just a month outside the 1-year warranty. I am not the only one with this problem, the internet is littered with the same issue: https://www.google.com/search?channel=fs&client=ubuntu&q=del... I've had enough from Dell, I will never buy from Dell again. The quality is just so bad...

I get it. I'm the same way. my 14" mbp with 64gb/ram is the perfect size/performance for me. I run intellij, docker, iterm2, chrome, obsidian and vscode. If there's OSX under there well...I guess so, but fuck it. I can't remember the last time I opened up system prefs, or any config file on my laptop. earlier this year I tried fedora 32 on my xps9500(a supposedly great linux laptop). After a freakin week random shit still wouldn't work right. And sleep/resume was like rolling a dice. No thanks.

+1, received a Dell XPS 15 9500 for work, and it is horrible. Countless complains in the Dell forums, and still so many issues after all the updates. The whole situation really corrodes my trust in Dell.

I was going to post the exact same thing. I have the 9500; this definitely infuriated me and is mostly solved by installing Linux. There are still some things that can annoyingly wake it (usually a bluetooth device trying to pair to it); but it's an odd exception versus the 50% chance every time I went to transport my laptop with Windows.
