My Caldigit TS4 dock is so close to being perfect except for my secondary monitor turning on maybe 50% of the time if I connect it to the dock via USB-C, I've given up and now have USB-C from the secondary monitor going straight to my laptop but let me be entirely clear in saying I hate that I have to do that.

CalDigit TS4 is the best dock I've used. I tried several. I get 2.5 GB Ethernet, two external 4k monitors, and much throughput.

What I ended up doing is making sure all my computers support Thunderbolt 3/4 (or USB 4 at minimum), getting a single good Thunderbolt dock (CalDigit TS4+) and just swap out which computer’s TB cable is plugged into the dock. To ease this I have a little magnetic pad stuck to my desk next to the dock which holds each computer’s cable when not in use. It works great for my needs. Perfectly for switching between Macs or PCs with Intel iGPUs. It almost works perfectly with my gaming PC (which sometimes does double duty as a Windows/Linux workstation) but its Nvidia GPU can get cranky when used with Thunderbolt GPU passthrough for some reason under both operating systems. I think the issue is actually in drivers, but good luck getting Nvidia to care about this use case. I’m considering putting an old AMD GPU in the second slot on the PC and using that for passthrough duty.

CalDigit's TS3, TS3 Plus, and now the TS4 are all incredible products. I have used them with my MacBooks over the years as well as my gaming PC (ASUS ProArt B550 motherboard), and they are the most reliable part of my desktop setup. They are not just reliable, but reliably fast. I get full gigabit ethernet speed, fast USB transfer speeds, and fast SD card reading, without fail, every time.

Surprised there was no mention of CalDigit docks. One of my desks has an old TS3+ that drives 2x 2560x1440 monitors perfectly from an M1 Pro machine, and it was rock solid when used with older Intel Macs and Windows PCs too. It’s Thunderbolt 3, but CalDigit recently released a TB4 version. I haven’t yet tried dual displays with it but my other desk is using a Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 4 Dock and it’s also been solid. I suspect that a lot of the more mass market oriented docks cut corners and don’t implement specs quite to full compliance which leads to weirdness like seen in the article.
