This used to work for me as well, but one day my eyes just gave out. I now need a setup similar to the article. I use two diffuse light sources at corners in the room, with BenQ light bar in front, and (almost most importantly) a warm lamp backlighting the monitor. I might replace the backlight with an RGB bias light of some sort, but it has to be there or everything gets painful fast.

The biggest transformation was getting an RH Mereo chair. For me it's solved the back and leg issues caused by poor posture. It's the first chair to make me sit comfortably & correctly [1]. Also transformational were: * Corne split keyboard * Benq e-reading lamp * Sit/stand desk * Cheap foldable laptop stand from AliExpress (laptops by default seem terrible for posture). I have found that a monitor light bar is excellent for reducing eye-strain in a dark room where the monitor is the only light source. BenQ makes the OG [1] but there are knockoffs available on Amazon that are decent. For daytime, facing a window while using a monitor is a major source of strain. This, of course, is a common post-pandemic arrangement as Team/Zoom calls look best with natural light on your face, but it's not doing your eyes any favours. The reason being that natural light intensity changes by multiple orders of magnitude, between sunny and overcast. Since the monitor stays at a constant brightness, your eyes have to work hard to keep the monitor at a constant perceptive brightness against a widely varying background, invariably causing strain over the course of the day. I've just moved. So I'm the same process but in a spare bedroom, not a garden office but about the same size as you office. Most of the stuff is still what I had at my last place. Current setup - Desk against the wall. Window into the garden on my left to give me something to look at other than screens. - Ikea Bekant sit/stand desk. A few years old now but it has been fine for me. I've not used the motors too often. Honestly I thought I'd use the different height more often. - Generic gaming chair. It was around £120 years ago. Purchased because it was much cheaper than an Herman Miller and the like. It has been fine certainly better than office chair of a similar price point. Coming to the end of its life. Something I'm actively looking to replace in the next couple of months with something more high end. - Cable trays to keep most of the cable off the floor. Triple monitors have a lot of cables. Cables on the floor just get in the way and collect dust. - Triple 27 inch monitors on a monitor arm bolted to the desk ( https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01MR0448N/ ). - Logitech Brio Webcam on a Elgato mount above the middle monitor. - BenQ ScreenBar monitor light ( https://www.benq.eu/en-uk/lamps/computer-desklamp/screenbar.... ) over the middle monitor. Expensive. I'd get one of the cheaper knock off if I was buying today. - Two Elgato key lights. - Stream Deck XL for short cuts and to control the lights. - Mechanical keyboard. - Gaming mouse. - Old PC speakers I've had for…
