Same, the Apple silicon chips have been huge. I bought a 2019 Intel MBP and that was by far the worst laptop I've ever had. After just a year of use it was constantly overheating and running out of memory and disk space, barely able to open a terminal. It was so bad that I hesitated to buy the Apple silicon versions, but the good reviews convinced me and it has been going strong ever since.

I'd be happy to switch to Linux, but my Macbook with M processor is a real work horse. First of all, everything works (bluetooth, headphones, camera, etc). Second of all, ARM based processor is a beast. Until someone release an ARM based laptop, I don't see myself switching to Linux.

Yeah, I've loved the ThinkPads I've had, but universally they felt slow, hot, and poorly built (especially the Yogas). Loud too, under load. And I always buy the on site service with them because I've had to use that a few times as various parts broke. They're Lenovo's premium brand but ultimately still just commodity PC parts enclosed in plastic/carbon. They are very light though. Not sure if the T model workstations are different (heavier and more robust?) The modern MacBooks are in a different world altogether, IMO. They make even the best ThinkPads I've owned feel like toys. They are just so so nice and leaving legacy x86 feels so liberating. Incredible power and battery life and performance. If I had to buy a PC laptop it'd probably be a ThinkPad. But because Apple Silicon is a thing, I don't think I'll buy another PC laptop again. It's such a dramatic difference. I don't need Linux (on the desktop) though. If that were a firm requirement, I wouldn't want to rely only on Asahi for production use.

The Apple Silicon MacBooks are very, very good. They're efficient, fast, well-built, have great peripherals, don't power themselves back on when you close the lid, and are generally the best laptops I have ever used. The worst part of them is macOS, and I hope that either Asahi Linux can get all of the hardware working correctly or the other laptop manufacturers can get their act together. Unfortunately, I suspect the former is more likely than the latter...

As a counterpoint, I have a 2015 MacBook, a 2015 iMac, and a recent Apple Silicon MacBook. Of course I do Photoshop, Lightroom, Generative AI, etc. on the Apple Silicon system. But I basically don't care which system I browse the web with and, in fact, the iMac is my usual for video calls and a great deal of my web document creation and the like. I suspect that people who have somewhat older Macs (obviously there's some limit) who find their web browsing intolerably slow probably have something else going on with either their install or their network.

Same here. Funnily enough, I started noticing mine more when I moved to a new Apple silicon macbook that didn't need the fan running full all-day. I was like "oh cool - I can have a silent workspace now", and I also disabled my Dyson fan's "constant air quality monitor" which spit our some constant decibels. Then when I was in silence, I realized I could notice it a lot. Maybe it's why I didn't notice it in the first place. > I always wear ear plugs at loud events like gigs It's kind of a blessing to experience it so you can be aware.
