What mission do you love from Framework? Is it environmental? If so, I seriously doubt that the lifetime pollution of a Framework laptop is better than an Apple Silicon Mac. Macbooks tend to last a very long time. I used my Intel Macbook Air for 10 years. After that, I sold it and maybe it continued to get used by the second owner. While you can keep upgrading Framework laptops (parts require shipping/pollution to manufacture), I doubt it'll last a decade or someone wants to upgrade it for a decade to keep up. Apple also has recycling programs and it seems to do quite well when it comes to using recycled materials. I doubt Framework is big enough to do these things as well as Apple. Framework laptops are often more than doubled the price of similar spec'ed Windows laptops. They're also quite a bit more expensive than Apple laptops in the same class. Framework is one of those things that is great for virtue signaling but doesn't make sense in real life. Edit: You can buy an M4 Air for $799 on sale frequently.[0] Meanwhile, a similar spec'ed Framework with a slower AMD CPU/GPU is $1,517.00.[1] So the repairability angle just doesn't seem worth it. If the Air breaks, just buy a new one. Keep in mind that the M4 Air has a better display, significantly faster CPU, faster GPU, significantly more battery life, is fanless, better speakers, much better trackpad, and a thinner profile. I like the aluminum body a lot. I'm not particularly clumsy, but each of my macbooks ends up with some fall damage at some point over the 5+ years that I have it. When I used to be assigned a plastic Dell work laptop, I dropped one onto the carpeted floor of my office because I thought it was going into my padded sleeve of backpack and that cracked the case, and broke the screen. I've accidentally yoinked my MBA (last intel one they made) off my desk, and while it dented the body of it, nothing broke. That is now my drum computer, and it gets regularly pelted with drumsticks when my grip tires.

Honestly, I don't think this is true. I had identical efficiency on my Intel MacBook Air running Linux, compared to OS X. Both ran out of battery +/- 10 minutes of each other on the same hardware. The only distinct advantage is Safari, which is heavily optimized for efficiency. But a lightweight Linux desktop, with fewer active services, can compensate for that.

Exact same boat here. A friend and I both bought the 2020 Intel MBA thinking that the M1 version was at least a year out. It dropped a few months later. I immediately resold my Intel MBA seeing the writing on the wall and bought a launch M1 (which I still use to this day). Ended up losing $200 on that mis-step, but no way the Intel version would still get me through the day. That said...scummy move by Apple. They tend to be a little more thoughtful in their refresh schedule, so I was caught off guard.

Yeah, good point. and it probably 'pulled forward' a lot of demand that might have landed in 2022 otherwise. I forgot how 'early' the M1s came out. (Personally, I bought an Intel Air in 2020 then immediately flipped it when the M1 Airs came out.. figured I might as well eat the loss right away and enjoy the new computer, vs suffering... and bought a studio in 2022.. and my new work machine is an M1 16". Definitely not feeling any FOMO over not waiting for the M2. Perfectly happy with what I have, although the M2 Mini might have been a better fit for me than the studio)
