I still have my 2013 11.6” i7 and once I replace the battery and hinges (threw it across bed while open too many times) it’ll be good for another 10 years. The original “MacBook” 12” retina could have been wonderful aside from the extremely poor performance, keyboard, and single USB, and battery life. Most of which Apple Silicon/lack of Jony Ive would fix. I don’t know why, but for me about 1kg feels negligible for a laptop I carry constantly, where 1.5kg feels heavy.

I doubt you would feel the same way if you had a M series MacBook Air.

I spent over $4,000 each on the last 2 MacBook Pro models. Good screen, bad keyboard, heavy. This year I spent $15,000 on a Mac Pro and love it. I also bought the 2019 Dell XPS 13, which is ok. But my favorite computer purchase this year is a refurbed 2015 MacBook Air with an i7 and 1 TB SSD for $800. I tried to move away from MB Airs starting in 2017 but they remain my favorite coding environment. Screen not as good as a Retina but it works at 2560x1440 on an external monitor when I care. Slips easily into a backpack, great fit and finish, obviously plenty fast for full stack web dev.

If you only need Linux then simply get a System76 or a Lenovo one. But, if you want a total integrated experience, one of the best laptops ever and some of the best dev tools out there, the MacOS X and the AIR are simply heaven sent. No, seriously, I went from Linux, to MacBook Pro 17" to MacBook Pro 14" (1650x resolution) to a MacBook Air 13" (1440x resolution, i7 with 8GB RAM and 512SSD) and it is really the best laptop I've ever owned. You got all of the best things in one machine, it great to carry around, the keyboard is simply awesome and it is extremely fast. Best buy I've ever done.
