I'm a convert on this topic. I went from wanting a small phone to being unable to wait to ditch mine. Like the OP, I switched from Android (Pixel 3a) to an iPhone SE 3 specifically for the smaller form factor. After using it for over a year, I've found the trade-offs in battery life and camera quality are too significant for my daily use. These limitations aren't an issue when I'm at home or my desk with easy access to a charger. However, they become acute the moment I'm out for the day. For example, using GPS for navigation or connecting Bluetooth accessories becomes a liability. I can't rely on the phone to last. Also, photos are noticeably more pixelated, and the quality drop-off is clear compared to larger, contemporary phones. This thread is evidence that the niche for small phones exists. But it's for people willing to accept these compromises by carrying a dedicated camera, a power bank, and using wired peripherals. For me and as the market suggests for most consumers, small phones just doesn't work out as reliable all-in-one devices. I'll probably wait till early next year to pick up one of the new iPhones after they iron out the initial kinks.

My daily driver is a de-Googled LineageOS device, but I purchased a $50us iPhone SE 3 for FaceTime. I have moved most of the my finance activity to it, along with my license and passport. I would never trust a Google device with this much, and the convenience has been profound in a few circumstances. I would relegate any intrusive apps here, and happily deny them cross-app tracking privileges.

I think it is probably only a hardware issue in the sense that the iPhone 13 mini is probably too old/slow to run iOS 26 as quickly as the old version. I updated my old/spare phone - an iPhone SE3, which I think has a similar processor and memory (A15 and 4GB). It became a lot more sluggish. I learned my lesson not to upgrade my main phone, also an iPhone 13 mini. I also noticed a disappointing slow down on a 9th gen iPad, which has even older internals. Actually, perhaps I should be quickly looking into downgrading that if it's possible.

Totally agree. Apply can pry my iPhone SE 3 from my cold dead hands. The perfect form factor. Touch ID instead of Face ID. It's the absolute pinnacle of the iPhone models, based on the iPhone 6. I don't understand why I can't just have this same phone with a slightly better camera. That's all I want.

On my iPhone SE 3: - Accessibility -> Display & Text Size -> Colour Filters -> Greyscale switches it on. It also sets the default colour filter which is helpful because ... - Accessibility -> Accessibility Shortcut -> Colour Filters means you can then triple-press the Home button (on an SE) to toggle that setting at any time As various studies have suggested in the past, I do find I use it less in greyscale.

Apple still sells the iPhone SE 3. Rumor has it that the next iPhone SE will lose the home screen button but retain the same size. The camera isn't as powerful as the iPhone 13/14/15 lines but I find that it does fine in low light and takes the same exceptionally beautiful photos in good lighting. It has portrait mode as well. It's not that much of a trade-off in terms of features or capability and it has the small size you'd expect.
