I kinda like the look of liquid glass. Though I'm also reminded of the whole Windows Vista debacle and the comparison seems apt. And iOS already had really bad contrast, like how you can't tell if the Wifi/Bluetooth are enabled/disabled depending on the background. My issue is that the iOS 26 update degraded the performance and probably battery life of my iPhone 13 mini. Just switching between home screen pages went from 60fps to 10fps even with liquid disabled. There are also weird changes like how the Safari url bar displays even less of the URL. On HN I only see "news.ycomb[[inator.com]]/item?id=1234", jeez. Only slightly better on a normal iPhone. I had no business trying out iOS 26 on a four year old phone. Should have just stayed with iOS 18(?) security updates until EOL.

> I'm holding out that Apple recognizes that most of the users of the 13 mini aren't serial upgraders and will continue refreshing the segment every 5 years or so I loved my iPhone 13 mini for the 3-years it was my daily driver. But yeah, the mini line is probably dead.

My 3 years old iPhone mini 13 is still very fast, reliable, and I love every part of the phone. It's such an amazing phone that functions well. The only thing got worsened is the battery, now at 87% even though I always charge it to 80-85%, now I have to charge it to 100% to use through the day. I still have extra power (like 30%) for a whole day. Replacing the battery isn't a problem. If Apple does support it like other models, it should last another 4-5 years more. I have no plan to upgrade to anything as I don't see anything comparable on the horizon.

I regretted it too after I went with an SE 2022. I thought the battery life would be better, and I thought I didn't want to swap Touch ID for Face ID. 18 months ago I bought a used iPhone 13 Mini, and much prefer it. I used to feel unhappy every time I held the SE 2022. I never liked the wider, rounded-edged shape of the iPhone 7/8. I'm finally going to get a battery swap for the 13 Mini from Apple this afternoon. I'm hoping that stops me vaguely wondering about battery swapping for my SE 2016 (1st gen) and going back to using that. I don't think I'd want to go back to a camera that old, and too many apps are not supported. That was the last iPhone I really loved. Fastest smartphone on the planet in benchmarks when it was released, and in the rare event that it slipped out of your (someone else's) hand, it felt unbreakable compared to newer iPhones.

I converted to an iphone 13 mini (from the S24 Ultra) after being on Android since the release of the HTC Desire in 2010. I used to install custom roms and tweak everything on all of my Android phones which actually lead me to the iphone because I realized I wanted a phone without all the OE clutter and Google crap. The only clutter on the iphone is icloud which stays out of the way and doesn't annoy me with subscription messages. Also I don't have time to fuck around with modifying my phone. I just want everything to work without user intervention.

My iPhone showed me an ad for apple pay (the nfc radio, not the credit card), which I regularly use. Today, I started carrying cash, and switched back to using the NFC chips in my credit cards. My iPhone 13 mini will probably be my last iOS device. Tap to pay was hard to setup in grapheneos the last time I checked. I guess I won’t miss it after all.

I've just written another post somewhere in this thread about discovering a nice feature in KDE Plasma, and remembered my recent search for a way to output HDMI from my old iPhone without ridiculous compression, and all this Linux phone talk stated to make me have crazy thoughts about how much I want Plasma Mobile. I was all set to write "just give me Plasma Mobile on something the size of an iPhone 13 Mini, and I don't care how much doesn't work". I used a 1st Gen iPhone SE, years past where it was sensible. I can suffer. I started to list my few, basic must-haves - aware that everyone has a different list - but my own short list got embarrassingly long, very quickly. I thought I had simple requirements! Obvious basics which surely aren't too much to ask: email, calendar, reminder and note syncing, password manager with TOTP generator, instant messaging (willingly to compromise and have only Signal or WhatsApp), route navigation, basic browsing, half-decent camera, ... Phone calls - so I probably need 4G and 5G... Oh - plus uncountable other small apps or utilities that hardly seem worth mentioning: calculator, file browser, compass, voice memos, ... And then I thought about the ever-growing list of big, ugly Apps that I could live without, but really do make my life easier. Banking apps (sigh - I hate how many of these virtually require an app), the app to unlock my apartment block door, Outlook, Teams, ... And then I started having sensible, disappointing thoughts. Maybe I…

I had an iPhone 13 Mini. I found it to be much worse about ads. Every time I opened the system settings, it would insert an ad for an Apple TV Trial after a 2 second delay, causing all the items to shift down, forcing me to either wait every time I opened Settings or else mis-click when it finished loading the ad. Android doesn't do this, it just shows me the system settings. I was so glad to go back to Android.

The phone that I'm still looking for is an iPhone Mini Pro. I miss my 13 Mini a lot. I'll take an iPhone clamshell fold if Apple ever makes one. That said, I understand why small screen phones don't sell well worldwide. For many people, especially younger generation or less wealthy countries, the phone is the person's only computer. It's their entertainment and their work.

Any improvements to voice to text? I use iPhone 13 Mini and so keyboard has always been hard to type on. But voice to text..man..it is an absolutly miserable experience that I wish I could swap out for any other competitor. I normally don't complain that iOS/MacOS isn't customizable because the defaults are good enough to work for me but that voice to text man its like they completely forgot about it.

I'm a 12/13 mini on my second refurbished 13 and a new battery. This is the first iPhone I've considered. Even so, the price is... impressive. I want a screen that my thumb can reach from top to bottom without stretching or doing weird half-screen swipes to get at. Also weird that they've gone back to touch ID instead of face ID to open/unlock. But I'll definitely be looking at it.

What is "meaningful"? I was listening to the Accidental Tech Podcast last week and Marco said that the iPhone Air has lower penetration, after 1 year, than EACH of the 12 mini and 13 mini _currently_ have. Among a tech audience. We just had to replace a family 13 mini and it sucks to have to go with a huge modern phone. Personally, I'd also prefer a mini if it had the best cameras.

It's battery life. I was an iPhone 13 mini user for the last few years. I would buy a refurbished one off Amazon whenever my current one broke. I really prefer the smaller screen size. Recently, I broke my phone again and my wife happened to have a larger iPhone laying around unused (through some accident of e-commerce). I felt weird buying a new phone when we had a perfectly good one laying around, so I decided to give it a shot. I don't watch any video on my phone and most of my screentime is Kindle and Safari. My screentime is only like 2-3hrs per day. And yet, I still found myself chronically running out of batteries on the 13 mini. I actually now would prefer to keep my new annoyingly large 16e just to not have the battery anxiety. (A hidden assumption in the above is that larger screens make more room for battery.)

This is pretty cool as a next-gen mini replacement. The one downside of my iPhone 13 mini is the rare case where I do need more screen. I couldn't spend $2000 on a phone, but I don't mind the direction.

> Honestly if anything it’s still a bit too big. Stumbled on my old iPhone 5S in the back of a drawer recently and could not believe how good it felt in my hand, even having only used 12 and 13 Mini models since 2021. What an excellent form factor and construction. Would happily pay a big premium for a modern version of it. Dreaming of a sub-mini phone trend. Sell me a $1500 Zoolander phone—not even joking!

lol i have upgraded multiple times and i always end up back on the iphone mini. it's cost me a lot of money to find out how much i truly value small phones. my phone use is so balanced compared to some of the people i sit around who are just glued to their damn phones all the damn time. i love the utility that i can literally do whatever i need on the iphone mini, but i don't feel drawn to pick it up and just scroll much. i think the size helps reinforce that a lot, and i mostly feel like i have such a healthier relationship with screen time than my coworkers, family and friends. if there was ever an iphone that was the size of the iphone 5 it would literally be over for me id pay 2000 dollars for it i dont care. there's literally no other options for small phones that don't suck right now i have looked exhaustively. the 13 mini is still the small phone king it's the best damn phone in the milky way.

Yeah I really miss the mini :( I went out of my way to make sure I found a "new" iPhone 13 mini for my corporate BYOD (needed for on-call, and I hate the cert they push so there's no way I'd use my personal phone...) The only corporate phones they offered were HUGE, being required to carry 2 phones is enough of an annoyance already, but two full-sized phones is a nightmare!

The other night I was at an event and pulled out my iPhone 13 mini to show some people a video I had taken -- the two people on either side of me exclaimed and pulled out their iPhone minis and we all laughed about holding on to them until they turn to dust.

Yeah, this happened to me overnight as well. Got the prompt for 18.7.8, and I allowed to install it over night. I wanted to avoid iOS 26 on this aging iPhone 13 Mini I, but hey, a security update sounds great. Now I woke up today with the iOS 26 Welcome Screen. Great. No way to revert this. Additionally I was on call, and I would bet money that the Welcome Screen meant I was not fully logged in (corroborated by the fact that I had to enter my SIM PIN after completing it). That is really, REALLY user hostile.
