It's a real shame they got rid of target display mode. But then people would hold onto iMacs even longer. Today, you can use software like Luna or Duet, or native screen sharing to control an iMac from another Mac (or vice versa). I have a 2019 iMac, bought for pennies and upgraded after to max out; way better value than buying the display on its own or a comparable monitor alone. The screen quality is just great. I use it both as a daily driver and as a "thin client" for all my other machines with the software above.

Adding my comment as reply as well as it is relevant: --- I've been holding over and running 10.5 on my iMac 2019, but then in the beginning of the year had to upgrade to Sequoia (due to software dependencies). Of course this is just a correlation, not necessary a causation, but within a month the iMac's internal SSD was corrupted to the point that it was unrecoverable, and my 40GB RAM corrupted. So, yeah, at the very least not sure how much testing went into Sequoia for non Mac Silicon macs. Quite disappointing considering how long a normal Mac's lifetime used to be, which also justified its high initial hardware price.

You probably know this but it’s possible to buy a controller card for the panel on Ali Express and retro-fit into the case and use as a monitor if you are ready to retire the computer itself. I’m contemplating doing this myself at some point but my maxed out 2019 iMac upgraded to 128GB ram and extra SSD is still plenty fast for me, actually feels subjectively quicker than my M2 Pro MacBook Pro with significantly less ram feel. I was a bit surprised as I had read all the hype of the responsiveness of the Apple M-machines.

In a similar situation ( mine is iMac 2019 ), I just added Linux box with 8x Xeon cores and Nvidia GPU. I use iMac as remote VNC / X11 client for that server. It still good enough for web browsing, email, and heavy tasks offloaded to Linux server. I do mostly ML / software build, no video editing though.
