Ok, why does running koboldcpp with a "BLAS Batch Size" of 512 via Vulkan on an RX570 crash my entire computer? You know, to the point where I manually have to turn it on again. I personally couldn't think of a better reason to never buy AMD GPUs ever again by the way.

I actually bought an RX 580 8 GB new for 139 EUR last year (most likely sat around some warehouse in an unopened box for years) - it has no issues running most indie games or even the decently optimized AAA games at 1080p, which was an upgrade over my previous RX 570 4 GB. The only actual issues I ran into were when I tried running it for PCVR (Quest 2) because the latest drivers actually cause crashes and instability, although I could fix that by rolling back to either the 2020 or 2022 drivers: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=38870500 Sometimes hardware from generations ago is not only decently affordable, but also sufficient for what you want to do, as long as your standards aren't super high. Getting some of that hardware with no previous owners also feels a bit interesting, albeit I've also bought used CPUs off of AliExpress for my homelab servers with no issues either.

I completed Fallout 3 a few months ago on Ubuntu 20 under Proton (and Fallout: New Vegas). Try using Lutris's implementation of wine ± proton -- my GOG copy "just worked", much to my surprise. Including the mods, and mod managers! If you continue to have trouble, drop me an email and I'll give you my configuration. I very much second your sentiment about proton being "good enough". It's amazing! I have a less than stellar GPU -- a Radeon 570 -- and haven't found a single game that I can't play on 'ultra' settings at 1080p, including the in-development BG3. After Apple's CSAM awfulness, my next laptop will be linux, ideally with a Zen processor, quite possibly running Manjaro and either KDE or i3.

There are out-of-bounds writes in the BLAS libraries for gfx803 GPUs (such as the RX 570). That hardware might work fine for your use case, but there's a lot of failures in the test suites. I agree that the official support list is very conservative, but I wouldn't recommend pre-Vega GPUs for use with ROCm. Stick to gfx900 and newer, if you can.
